Endometriosis care in Denmark

In short

Denmark's pathway is not the NHS pathway. The steps, centres, and medicines below come from OpenEndo's sourced access file, which is updated in the open repository. Confirm anything that affects your care with your own clinician or the official page linked on the record.

How to read this page

The care steps, centre names, and medicine notes are rendered from docs/data/access.json in the OpenEndo repository. Each record carries its own sources and a verified date. If that file cannot be loaded, this page says so. It does not fall back to an older handwritten list.

General facts about the disease — that there is no cure, and that diagnosis is often delayed — are the WHO statements on the other guides. They are not Danish law.

Danish sources to read alongside this

Lægehåndbogen on sundhed.dk is the Danish clinical overview used by clinicians. Endometriose Fællesskabet is the patient organisation: counselling, community, and help with rights at work and in the system. The two specialised centres named in the access file are Rigshospitalet in the east and Aarhus University Hospital, Skejby, in the west. The live list below is the one to use if those names or roles change.

OpenEndo access data is curated from public sources with per-entry confidence and verified dates. It is NOT medical advice. Reimbursement, availability and prices change — always verify with the pharmacy, your doctor, or the linked official sources before acting. Entries without a confidence tag are unverified placeholders. · Verified 2026-09-07

Care path

  1. Start with your GP: describe symptoms; first-line options are hormonal treatment and pain relief.
  2. Mild/moderate disease → GP or gynecologist (private practice or hospital clinic) manages medical treatment.
  3. Persistent pain despite treatment → your GP/gynecologist refers you to a gynaecological department.
  4. Suspected deep or advanced endometriosis → referral to one of the two specialised centres (Rigshospitalet, East / AUH Skejby, West). Free hospital choice applies.
  5. Newer options: Ryeqo (reimbursed, specialist prescription) or Yselty (out-of-pocket / enkelttilskud via region).
  6. Contact Endometriose Fællesskabet for support and rights guidance at any point.

Specialised centres

  • Rigshospitalet — Endometriosis team (Copenhagen)

One of two Danish highly specialised centres for severe/advanced endometriosis — multidisciplinary team, laparoscopic + robot-assisted surgery, incl. deep infiltrating endometriosis (bowel/bladder). Referral from GP or gynecologist.

  • Aarhus University Hospital, Skejby — Clinic for Women's Diseases (Endometriosis team)

One of two Danish highly specialised centres for severe/advanced endometriosis — multidisciplinary team (4 specialised nurses, 4 senior doctors), high volume, works with urology/gastro/plastic surgery for complex cases.

  • GP → gynecologist → hospital department

Mild/moderate endometriosis is managed by your GP or a gynecologist (private practice or hospital out-patient clinic): first-line hormones + pain relief. Persistent pain despite treatment → referral to a gynaecological department. Suspected deep/advanced disease → referral to one of the two specialised centres. Free hospital choice (frit sygehusvalg) applies — your postcode does not restrict access.

Medications

  • Ryeqo (relugolix 40 mg + estradiol + NETA)

    Reimbursed · high confidence

General reimbursement (generelt tilskud) — automatic at the pharmacy for the endometriosis indication.

  • Yselty (linzagolix 100/200 mg)

Out of pocket · high confidence

Authorised in Denmark, but NO general reimbursement for endometriosis (fibroid-only clause). Out-of-pocket at the pharmacy unless the region grants individual reimbursement (enkelttilskud) on application.

  • First-line hormonal + pain treatment

    Prescription · high confidence

Continuous combined pill, hormonal IUD or progestin, plus NSAID/paracetamol — first-line per Danish guidance (Lægehåndbogen). Reimbursement follows the normal per-product rules; many products carry general reimbursement.

  • GnRH analogues (injection/implant)

    Specialist only · high confidence

Used for severe disease, max ~6 months, with add-back (estrogen/progestin) to reduce side effects. Hospital/specialist setting.

Support organisations

  • Endometriose Fællesskabet (formerly Endometriose Foreningen)

Denmark's patient organisation (member of Danske Patienter). Telephone counselling open to all — members and non-members; legal counselling (rights at work, education, benefits) for members. Founded 1997.
